At first glance, the premise behind Voodoo Soup seemed simple enough. Reissue titles originally released on the posthumous Hendrix collections The Cry of Love and Rainbow Bridge (much of the material on which was intended for the double album that Hendrix was working on at the time of his death). Unfortunately, Hendrix curator Alan Douglas has once again decided to radically remix the titles and, in the case of late-period pieces like “Stepping Stone” and “Roomful of Mirrors,” add drumming by former Knack member Bruce Gary. The results are typical of the historically bastardized work Douglas has produced since being hired as keeper of the flame in 1974, and Voodoo Soup serves as a cautionary tale for all artists, regardless of genre, about the unromantic side of dying young.
