I AM A STUDENT AT Gallaudet University, and have come across this article in “News of the Weird” (4/21) that undermines the legacy and understanding of people who happen to be deaf. Yes, there are some parents out there who rejoice when they have deaf children, to keep the culture of deaf people strong in a nation where they are constantly trying to correct a wrong. Placing an article of this nature with other articles such as a lumberjack paying with tampons is an insult to those who are deaf.

I’ve grown up deaf and am really happy that I was able to experience a way of life that the majority of the world has not seen. As a matter of fact, this proves that some of your staff have never consciously met a deaf person and remain oblivious to cultural differences in their own city.
