Local rockabilly enthusiasts may have spotted a familiar name in the credits to Richard Linklater’s Before Sunrise: The cast list includes one “Tex Rubinowitz.” Rubinowitz, a fixture in the Washington rockabilly scene until the late-’80s, has received numerous calls from friends since the film’s release. Yet “I was not in the film to the best of my knowledge,” he says. Speculating that the Sunrise extra is an overseas admirer, Rubinowitz explains that he still receives royalty checks from Europe for his song “Hot Rod Man.” Locals who want the original article can catch Tex nightly on the jukebox at Bethesda’s Tastee Diner.
