Washington is an awful town for mascots. The Bullets are represented by Hoops, a gigantic, bad-tempered orange beanbag. George Washington University’s fans are afflicted with a megacephalic, ax-wielding version of our first president. And the prospect of a Senators mascot should dissuade even the most rabid fan from wishing for baseball’s return to the District. Fortunately, D.C.’s indoor soccer team—the Washington Warthogs—understands that furry, strange animals make the best mascots. Audition for the role of Rooter, and the chance to wear a sweltering warthog suit all summer long, at the team’s Mascot Tryouts. Bring your own music and a two-minute choreographed routine from 5 to 7 p.m. to USAir Arena, Landover. FREE. To register for an audition call (301) 499-6300. (David Plotz)
