If the poles of rock ‘n’ roll are honesty and theater, it’s no secret that the former finds greater favor among most theorists—but fraud has its own appeal. Although Scarce guitarist Chick Graning’s gold glitter suit, manic grin, and stagy intensity all bespeak a conception of rock as invigorating lie, his band shows off a sound so winning you’ll hardly care. At their November 9:30 Club appearance, the Providence-based three-piece tellingly covered “Ashes to Ashes,” just in case anyone missed the joke. With Supergrass at 9:30 p.m. at the Black Cat, 1831 14th St. NW. $5. (202) 667-7960. (Glenn Dixon)
