The combination of discordant guitar and ethereal vocals usually denotes sensory dislocation, and the Melting Hopefuls did title their album Space Flyer. But this predominantly female quintet’s lyrics can be direct and even earthy: In “What She’s Wearing,” the singer remonstrates sexist rock critics; in “Pulling an Allnighter on Myself,” she happens upon her boyfriend while he’s masturbating. The New Jersey band and Mistle Thrush open for Seattle neo-hippie ensemble Sky Cries Mary at 8:30 p.m. at the Black Cat, 1831 14th St. NW. $8. (202) 667-7960. (MJ)
