At a ceremony last week, USDA officials retired an individual who served the department for “10 of his 11 years.” Sam is part of USDA’s Beagle Brigade, “passively trained dogs that detect prohibited fruits, plants, and meat that could contain plant and animal pests and diseases.” Also unveiled were commemorative postcards of the brigade’s 30 beagles—featuring Dulles’ own Jackpot and Sam, looking back over his shoulder, ears flapping in the wind, and a don’t-let-the-gut-fool-you Joe Friday glint in his eye.
