Apparently released with little fanfare last summer, Drown’s debut would have evaded my metalhead radar but for recent airplay on 98 Rock’s indispensible Sunday night Mosh Pit show. A satisfyingly brutal industrial/metal crossover, Hold On to the Hollow echoes the stylings of bands such as Ministry and Pitch Shifter, although Drown’s approach appeals more unabashedly to the average headbanger: Both Joseph Bishara’s guitars and Lauren Boquette’s vocals are consistently tortured. Like most metal releases, there are indulgences to be endured (here, the meandering “Longing”), but the frenzied clang of “Transparent” and “Beautiful” make it worth the effort.
