MARCH 21-26

This show is precisely what it sounds like: Alec McCowen, one of the English stage’s most versatile actors, stands at center stage and “performs”—which is to say, recites—every word of the Gospel according to St. Mark. Last time the show played the Kennedy Center it was in the 500-seat Terrace Theater; this time it’s in the 1200-seat Eisenhower, which says something about its word-of-mouth. McCowen’s a grand storyteller, and here he’s got hold of a grand story (some say the greatest ever told), and if you aren’t spellbound within five minutes…hell, you just haven’t been listening. At 7:30 p.m. at the Kennedy Center’s Terrace Theater. $25-30. (202) 467-4600. (Bob Mondello)
