KUDOS TO WASHINGTON City Paper for continued excellence in feature writing. “Midwife Crisis” (3/3) contains my nominee for the stupid quote of the week. Sgt. Gary Childs of the Carroll County sheriff’s office says parents “develop a bond with these midwives. If they say the midwife did something wrong, they’re admitting it was their responsibility for having the midwife and they share the blame.” Exactly! They feel responsible because they partly are, a concept seemingly lost on Childs and our legal system. Childs attributes accepting responsibility to “a denial kind of thing.” In fact it is those who are quick to blame anyone—other than themselves—who remain in denial.
