Some gospel groups will only perform in churches, but Clarence Fountain and the Blind Boys From Alabama have no such qualms. Singing in nightclubs, as part of the Broadway musical The Gospel at Colonus, and at music festivals worldwide, this classic ’40s Southern-style ensemble features the impassioned, shouting lead of Fountain backed by smooth quartet harmonies and bass-and-guitar accompaniment. Though the sound of these veteran singers is rooted in the past, they’re not stuck in it—they can be heard on the recent Richard Thompson tribute album Beat the Retreat. At 4 p.m. at the Lincoln Theater, 1215 U St. NW. $15-22. (202) 328-9177. (Steve Kiviat)
