“I’m enjoying my return to the counterculture,” says former Hill staffer Cindy Cain, putting a positive spin on the professional freedom foisted upon her by the voter rebellion back in November. Cain now has a lot more time to focus on her role as lead singer/flack for C.C. & the Rhythm Toys, an Arlington-based roots/R&B combo. Maybe it’s just a coincidence, but the band’s newest batch of original material is more subdued than that on its lively 1993 debut. On the appropriately titled “Nothin’ But the Blues” from a just-recorded demo, Cain wails, “Don’t really sing nothin’/I don’t sing nothin’ but the blues.” C.C. & the Rhythm Toys will showcase the fresh stuff Feb. 17 at Slade’s in Arlington and again Feb. 20 at Chief Ike’s.
