The most striking aspect of Värttinä‘s sound is the powerful, tight harmony provided by the Finnish folk ensemble’s four female vocalists. They are backed by a talented crew of instrumentalists playing fiddle, accordion, kantele (traditional Finnish zither), bouzouki, saxophone, bass, drums, and more. Imagine a pumped-up (but smaller) Bulgarian women’s choir supported by a rockin’ semiacoustic band with echoes of Anglo-Celtic and Eastern European traditional musics and you’ve got the idea. At 7 p.m. at the National Museum of Natural History’s Baird Auditorium, 10th & Constitution Ave. NW. $17. (202) 357-3030. (Ken Roseman)
