During the freeway frenzy of the Eisenhower era, the Washington Post was just as crazy for wrecking balls and bulldozers as it is today, so it was only natural that it would endorse a plan to pave over the C&O Canal. Fortunately, William O. Douglas was as formidable a walker as he was a Supreme Court Justice; he led opinion-makers on hikes along the canal that eventually led to its rebirth as a national park. In today’s talk, “Justice Prevails: William O. Douglas and the C&O Canal,” a park ranger will explain the justice’s tactics. Meet at 1 p.m. at the Georgetown Ranger Station, 30th & Thomas Jefferson Sts. NW. FREE. (301) 299-3613. (MJ)
