DESPITE DETESTING CHRIStianity, I applaud the Nixon Memorial Church (“News of the Weird,” 2/10), since President Richard Nixon was crucified for purely political reasons. Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, and Khomeini were never more vilified than Nixon was by the leftist media of the early ’70s, and occasionally by the far right.
The attacks on Nixon went beyond hysterical to insane. Supposedly, we were on the brink of fascism, the plumbers were the secret police, and the republic was narrowly saved from destruction. Senator Sam Ervin even said, “Watergate is a worse tragedy than the Civil War!”
Nietzsche wrote, “It is an honor to have “first Christians’ against one…even the Scribes and Pharisees…must have been worth something to be hated in such an indecent fashion.” Nixon must have been worth something to be hated in such an indecent fashion, by the America-hating, pro-communist leftists of the early ’70s.
