The ’70s revival takes many forms: Sky Blues concludes its six-song CD, matter-of-factly titled Extended Play, with “Give a Little Bit,” the 1977 hit by AOR antichrist (come on, you remember) Supertramp. Well, better that than “The Logical Song,” and the Blues are by no means ‘tramp revivalists. Instead, this semilocal quartet (guitarist/bassist Jon Rubin lives here, although the band is based in the New York area) provides an eclectic mix of non-punk styles, mixing fluid hard-rock guitar with everything from the pomp-rock balladry of “Tell You Everything” to the dubbery of “Daily Grind.” In the long run, the band would probably benefit from developing a stronger sense of its own style, but its versatility no doubt serves it well at venues like the Bayou, where it occasionally plays. The E.P. EP is available from Captain Howdy Records, P.O. Box 308-H, Scarsdale, NY 10583.
