As Californians know, the principal reason to watch beach volleyball is to bask in the sun and scope scantily clad fellow spectators. So visitors to the Evian Indoor-AVP Pro Beach Volleyball Championships may be confused about what they are doing inside the Patriot Center during the depths of winter. But with the thermostat set at 82 degrees and 240 tons of trucked-in sand creating a mini-Malibu, spectators can spread their towels, strip down to bathing suits, and start ogling. When that gets boring, they can watch volleyball deities like Karch Kiraly dig and spike their way to a chunk of the quarter-million dollars of prize money. Beat the cold at 1 p.m. at George Mason University’s Patriot Center, 4400 University Dr., Fairfax. $12.50-29.50. (703) 993-3000. (David Plotz)
