Defunkt Special Edition fanatics think it just may be the coolest band of all time, but listeners unprepared for the gonzo weirdness of trombonist Joseph Bowie’s ensemble might mistake the ensemble for a hybrid of Trouble Funk and the Bus Boys on acid. For this live New York date—a dual tribute to Jimi Hendrix and Muddy Waters—Bowie added sometime-phenom guitarist Jean-Paul Bourelly, a downtown darling who also writes pop dreck for the likes of Bel Biv DeVoe. Bourelly’s not nearly as harmonically interesting as he thinks he is, but his solos on Band of Gypsies’ classic “Who Knows” and the warp-speed “Man ic Depression” will impress listeners who’ve never heard of Allan Holdsworth. Bowie can’t actually sing, which makes his irrepressible urge to do so all the more charming. Sort of.
