Only one American magazine, TV Guide, can rival the market penetration enjoyed by the best-selling manga, Japanese comic books; the success of such titles as Shonen Jump and Big Comic for Lady, Frederick Schodt notes in his Manga! Manga! The World of Japanese Comics, is such that in Japan more paper is used to print comic books than for toilet paper. Schodt will discuss the phenomenon of manga (one literal translation is “corrupt drawings”) at today’s “Japanese Manga Symposium.” Joining him will be Japanese cartoonist Kenshi Hirokane, Mangajin magazine editor/publisher Vaughan Simmons, Animerica editor Trish Ledoux, and others. From 1:30-5:50 p.m. at the Georgetown University Intercultural Center Auditorium, 37th & O Sts. NW. FREE. (202) 687-5918. (Mark Jenkins)
