City Paper is not for tourists.
Although the cost of building a fence at Marion Barry’s home has been much in the news, the cost of dismantling Sharon Pratt Kelly’s security fence and guard booth has gone unnoticed. That is, until we called the Department of Public Works (DPW) last week to inquire about their fate. Our phone call wasn’t returned for one day. Can it be mere coincidence that, during that same day, the booth was removed from its former place of (Her)honor? DPW spokesperson Linda Grant says “12 people,” including administrators, drivers, and hoisters, were utilized to haul the booth “intact to the police warehouse on Potomac Street SE.” Final cost: $1,500. (Hey, compared to 1 Judiciary Square, with its 11th-floor, bulletproof windows, that’s a real bargain!) The future of Kelly’s fence is unclear, as is whether or not Barry will use her hand-me-down booth.
