JANUARY 24
The son of a muezzin and a folk singer, Senegal’s Baaba Maal has applied his distinctive wail to both quiet efforts featuring acoustic guitar and kora, and to keyboard- and horn-driven worldbeat projects like his latest, Firin’ in Fouta. Though Maal’s limited vocal range sometimes makes his singing style repetitious, the same cannot be said of his eclectic arrangements and talented supporting cast. At 10 p.m. at the Black Cat, 1831 14th St. NW. $18. (202) 667-7960. (Steve Kiviat)
