JANUARY 20 & 21

Tom Waits’ haunting “Old Boyfriends,” which graced Francis Coppola’s undeservedly neglected One From the Heart, has now lent its title and singular imagery to Brit jazz vocalist Claire Martin’s second album. Martin sounds devastatingly sexy and somehow sly when wrapping her voice around the notion of men who are “lost in the pockets of your overcoat.” She does equally well by the rest of her repertoire—which includes underperformed standards by everyone from Sigmund Romberg to Rupert Holmes. Still in her mid-20s and blessed with insight into lyrics that most cabaret artists only dream of possessing, she’s backed on Boyfriends by a savvy quintet that powers her uptempo ballads as expertly as it supports sultry ones. David Newton opens at 8 & 10 p.m. tonight and tomorrow at the Willard Hotel’s Nest Lounge, 1401 Pennsylvania Ave. NW. $12. (202) 628-9100. (Bob Mondello)
