Christy & Emily keyboardist Emily Manzo may have obtained a degree in serious piano chops from Oberlin College, but when she teams up with guitarist Christy Edwards, the results are more Damon & Naomi than Henry Cowell. The duo crafts music that is deceptively simple and unexpectedly approachable. Songs such as “Noah” revel in vertigo-inducing keyboard arpeggios that whirlpool beneath clouds of reverberant guitars and streams of tiny vocal melodies. Other moments capture the post-loft-party haze of the Velvet Underground records. There’s nary an atonal keyboard cluster to be found here, but there’s enough hydrographic sensuality to float you away down the river. Make sure to wear a life preserver. Christy & Emily perform with Foreign Press and Koshari at 9 p.m. at the Velvet Lounge, 915 U St. NW. $7. (202) 462-3213.
