IT IS TEMPTING TO REspond to the fabrications and fantasies of those involved in the purge of the Progressive Caucus from Americans for Democratic Action (ADA) as outlined in last week’s “Loose Lips” column. I have found, however, that arguing with the ADA establishment is like giving a drink to an alcoholic: It only makes matters worse. It is better, I think, that we return to our affairs. I need to begin my exciting new life as a certified ex-liberal. Loose Lips can resume coverage of serious politics. And the ADA establishment can regain its proper place in the political landscape where it rests—in Disraeli’s phrase—like a range of exhausted volcanoes.
