If the North American Man/Boy Love Association (NAMBLA) didn’t exist, the Christian right would have to invent it—if they didn’t in the first place. Last weekend, the chimerical organization held its membership conference in Washington, and a brochure mailed to registrants suggested the International-AYH Hostel at 11th and K Streets NW as a cheap place to stay. Oops. This so enraged one Harley David Belew that he drove all the way down from area code 607 (upstate New York, we believe) to stage a press conference in front of the hostel. Flanked by Operation Rescue national spokesman Pat Mahoney and a woman waving a well- thumbed copy of Padika: The Journal of Pedophilia, anti-homosexual activist Belew called on Attorney General Janet Reno—via six cameras and a dozen bored reporters—to investigateNAMBLA. “I spoke with a member of NAMBLA who said he came here for a public-policy discussion about lowering the age of consent,” said a reporter for Fox TV to Belew. “What law does that break?” “The morality of America!” spat Belew, who said he was “outraged” that NAMBLA would commandeer—of all possible lodgings —a youth hostel. But no man-boy love action seemed to be taking place inside the hostel, which had exactly one lonely NAMBLA member registered as a guest, according to deputy manager John France—and a minimum age of 18.
