Never say the KenCen isn’t cutting edge: Why else would this year’s Kennedy Center Open House Arts Festival include a demonstration by the U.S. Canoe and Kayaking Team, if not to expand the parameters of what may be considered art? Whatever the motivation, the festival truly offers something for everyone: Among the 50-odd events featured during the four-stage tribute to local artists are African storytelling, square dancing, Chinese dance, comedy improv, tap dancing, steel-drumming, face-painting, and a stagecraft presentation by the carpenters who brought us Phantom‘s special effects. From noon to 6 p.m. at the Kennedy Center. FREE (though tickets are required for some events). (202) 476-4600. (Liza Mundy)
