Edsel’s DeSoto label is now operated by Jawbox’s Bill Barbot and Kim Coletta, but in a responsible example of post-punk industrial policy, the two quartets share the recent Your Selection single. Both bands sound tightly controlled on the disc, with solid structures and deliberate tempos taking precedence over the swirling guitar noise that decorates J’s “Savory” and E’s “Penaluna.” The stop/start edginess of the former is a little more immediate than the spaciness of the latter, but owners and employees seem pretty evenly matched. DeSoto has also moved beyond the Beltway with “Positronic Ray” by Hurl, a Pittsburgh quartet whose occasionally flaring slo-mo rock wouldn’t make an incongruous Selection. DeSoto’s address is P.O. Box 60335, Washington, DC 20039.
