Pianist/composer Don Pullen‘s notable association with Charles Mingus (the results of which can be heard on newly reissued Changes One and Two) proved him capable of exploring jazz’s romantic and avant-garde elements with stunning results. His latest ensemble, the AfricanBrazilian Connection, weds Pullen and reedman Carlos Ward’s lyricism with the driving, rhythmic fervor emanating from those locales. Tonight at 8 & 10 p.m., Saturday at 8 & 10 p.m. & midnight at Blues Alley, 1073 Wisconsin Ave. Rear NW. $18 plus a $7 minimum. (202) 337-4141. (Reuben Jackson)
