My advice to jazz purists: Shelve your preconceptions about so-called “jazz and hiphop fusion,” and deal with Jazzmatazz‘s musical offerings on their own terms. In addition to providing a showcase for artists deserving wider recognition (Young Disciples vocalist Carleen Anderson and guitarist Zachery Breaux, for instance), project leader Guru is one of rap’s more original lyricists. His principle cohort, trumpeter Donald Byrd, contributed significantly to jazz’s foundation (with Trane et al.) and to its early pop expansion (the Blackbyrds). London saxophonist Steve Williamson has been sitting in, and, if we’re lucky, they might just put a little more Monk in their funk at 8:45 p.m. at the 9:30 Club, 930 F St. NW. $20. (202) 930-0930.
