SEPTEMBER 26

Pegged as cyberpunk thrashers long before Billy Idol’s comeback attempt, Voivod’s otherworldly avant-metal on albums including ’88’s brilliant Dimension Hatröss gained sufficient notoriety to transport the group from a small town in northern Quebec to Montreal. On its latest, The Outer Limits, Voivod continues to spiel a strange mix of metal and chaos, but with cyberpunk now buried under the weight of its own clichés, the trio’s lyrical themes have shifted to fittingly ’90s subject matter: retro sci-fi. Opening is the excellent angst-noise of Clutch as well as Damn the Machine. Sunday at 7:30 p.m. at the Bayou, 3135 K St. NW. $9. (202) 333-2897. (Stephen Kuhn)
