The Smithsonian Institution continues its mission to educate the American public by…issuing a new line of jewelry. Designed and sold by a private firm, the wearable art will be based on historical items in the Smithsonian collection, like Victorian necklaces or Japanese sculptures. One could argue that the Smithsonian is hoping to raise (or is it lower?) history to the level of chic. Or one could suspect that severe funding problems are behind the quest for licensing fees. After all, as the press release notes, the new baubles will be “very giftable.”
