OCTOBER 6

Pan emerged from some of Trinidad’s poorest areas, and one of them, Laventine Hills, is the birthplace and current home of Desperadoes Steel Orchestra, which is among Trinidad’s premier steel bands. Desperadoes boasts seven Pan-O-Rama championships and three consecutive trophies from the Steelband Music Festival, a prestigious biennial competition in which bands vie against each other with local, international, and classical pieces. Desperadoes’ international reputation is no doubt due to its flawless execution, syncopated rhythms, and exquisite arrangements: This is one of the few steel orchestras in which you can hear each individual pan being played. Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. at the Kennedy Center Concert Hall. $22.50-34.50. (202) 467-4600. (Julie Gouveia)
