Arlington death-metal quartet Deceased is back with its third Relapse Records release, The 13 Frightened Souls, a five-song EP boasting lyrics that—surprise!—tend toward the morbid. Themes including toxic and cybernetic apocalypse betray a Voivod influence (the EP includes a Voivod cover, and the Canadian trio’s vocalist reciprocated at Sunday’s Bayou show by sporting a Deceased T-shirt), but the music itself comes closer to Sepultura, with galloping rhythms and quieter turns. Mostly, Souls is satisfying if unimaginative death thrash, with the quartet unleashing its best riffs at EP’s end on “Nuclear Exorcist.” Relapse’s catalog says it’ll take money orders and “well-concealed cash,” but no checks: Write Relapse Records, P.O. Box 251, Millersville, PA 17551.
