October’s crisp air and promise of autumn bring on a certain hay-ride-and-spiced-cider mood, and Washington, Va.’s annual celebration of the rural community, Crossroads 1993, readily exploits that feeling. Today through Sunday, Crossroads offers “Soil & Soul” events at five farms; among the highlights are workshops in organic pest control and beekeeping. (One draft-horse-farm tour includes a “pageant complete with masks, dance, drumming, and visuals.”) More conventional approaches—a square dance, a farmer’s market, and a concert by folkie John McCutcheon—balance the schedule. Register for the event at the Ki Theater, Gay Street, Washington, Va. $5-12. For more information call (703) 675-1616. (Nathalie op de Beeck)
