Max Waldron’s career has encompassed stints with Billie Holiday, Jackie McLean, and Steve Lacy; his solo piano dates, like Blues for Lady Day, boast alternately heartbreaking and rhythmically jagged textures. Waldron performs with saxophonist Chico Freeman (who, like his equally formidable father Von, is heard far too infrequently these days).
