WHILE I DON’T ALWAYS agree with everything Mark Jenkins writes in his reviews and columns, I have always held a healthy respect for the apparent thoroughness and accuracy of his research. That is why it came as somewhat of a surprise to notice that he is seemingly unaware that Chinese names properly place the family name first. Thus, the director of Ju Dou and Raise the Red Lantern would by Yimou to his friends and Mr. Zhang to film reviewers and others who don’t know him personally.

Otherwise, Mark (sorry, Mr. Jenkins), keep up the good work of informing your readers in spite of themselves. Anyone who considers the Smiths and the Jesus and Mary Chain the seminal bands of the 1980s can’t be all wrong.
