Our boys in blue are red-faced again. In the Oct. 31 Washington Post, the New York Modeling Agency advertised a Nov. 6 swimsuit-calendar model search at the Crystal City Marriott. The (Tail) hook? The winning glam girls get to appear in a “government-contracted swimsuit calendar sold on Navy vessels.” The ad also claims that the calendar offers “nationwide exposure.” That’s too modest, given that sailors will be ogling these beauties in Guantanamo, Okinawa, and across the seven seas. Good taste may be lacking in the Navy, but deniability is everywhere; a Navy spokesman acknowledges that the service buys the calendars for resale below deck, but says they aren’t official Navy calendars, just civilian calendars sold on ships. The Navy has demanded that the agency withdraw the ad and publish a retraction. The agency, whose office is in Norfolk, Va., a Navy hub, didn’t return phone calls.
