From his mock-soundtrack solo albums to such collaborations as Torture Garden (an exception is “Cat o’ Nine Tails,” recorded for the Kronos Quartet’s recent Short Stories), John Zorn tends to favor collage over coherence. Expect the same of Zorn’s new outfit, Mesada, which features avant-rock star-sideman Marc Ribot on guitar. Opening is Trenchmouth, an ambitious Chicago post-punk quartet whose work sounds a lot less dinky than most of what comes out of Brad Wood’s studio. At 8:30 p.m. at the Black Cat, 1831 14th St. NW. $12. (202) 667-7960. (Mark Jenkins)
