The performance starts out like all the dances you suffered through in youth: a clutch of semi-coordinated bodies milling around an enclosed space, all of them doing their own particular thing and usually not particularly well. But then the Sarah Skaggs Dance Company takes party dancing to a professional level—or vice versa—when the real dancers seize the floor for 45 choreographed minutes, showing how it’s really done before they subside back into the crowd, surrendering the event to the ordinary dorky partiers. There are, one feels sure, great themes being examined here; perhaps you can figure out what they are when the group performs Higher Ground at 4 p.m. at Dance Place, 3225 8th St. NE. $5-10.
