Last broadcast on WPFW-FM (89.3) in the fall of ’91, DJ (and Washington City Paper contributor) Bobby Hill’s ambitious audio project,ReStRuCtUrInGs, is back. Hill’s work juxtaposes jazz recordings with those from other genres, primarily hiphop (compositions by Dizzy Gillespie meet Gangstarr, for instance), in an effort to “layer different musics in a way that they become one, showing the music’s natural interrelationships.” No mere audiophilic hobbyist, Hill says his aim is no less than the “demystification of the concept of genre distinction.” ReStRuCtUrInGs will be rebroadcast on Thursday evenings in December from 9 p.m. until midnight.
