Flautist Herbie Mann‘s 40-year career has seen him pass through Brazilian-, funk-, and R&B-tinged phases—he also once employedfree-jazz guitarist Sonny Sharrock. Tonight, Mann’s 40 years in the biz are being celebrated with a band (guitarist Cornell Dupree, saxophonist David “Fathead” Newman, keyboardist Les McCann, bassist Chuck Rainey, and drummer Buddy Williams) more than capable of reprising Mann classics like “Memphis Underground” and anything else they care to play. At 8:30 p.m. at George Mason University’s Center for the Arts, Braddock Rd. & Rte. 123, Fairfax. $22-26. (703) 993-8888. (Reuben Jackson)
