ONE OF THE MAIN REASONS I faithfully pick up Washington City Paper every Thursday is to read the film clips. No other paper in town gives a serious review of films worth considering by someone who loves film as an art form and not only as entertainment. The mass production of inane, repetitious films that try to titillate with sex and violence is offensive. Few films coming from Hollywood draw to inner feelings and sensitivity; to rhythms that allow for thought; to beauty beyond technical precision. Let us hope that the Europeans will be able to continue their tradition of good films and not be contaminated by the sad mediocrity that enslaves our “entertaining” film industry.
