The Greater Washington Urban League is trying to defuse potentially volatile situations by mailing 3,000 copies of a brochure titled What to Do When Stopped by the Police to area residents. The brochure entreats people to “stay calm, act mature, keep a level head, and use common sense” when dealing with the police, and warns that one wrong move could prove fatal. “In many situations, you can talk your way into jail just as well as you can talk your way out of jail. Avoid being confrontational. By yelling or threatening a police officer, you can get yourself arrested or WORSE, cause the officer to exceed his or her authority. And who needs that!”
