After this summer’s wallow in festivals distant and recent, a batch of outtakes from the 1969 edition may be at the bottom of your shopping list. However, Woodstock Diary offers gems of interest not only to manic completists, but to fans of many of the concert’s musicians. To compensate for Joe Cocker’s excesses on “Let’s Go Get Stoned,” for example, Atlantic includes his transcendent “I Shall Be Released.” Creditable outings by Johnny Winter (“Mean Town Blues”) and Crosby, Stills and Nash (“Blackbird”), and a 12:10 “Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)” from Jimi Hendrix balance a mix that also includes mediocrities by Janis Joplin, Mountain, Jefferson Airplane, and Richie Havens, as well as the excrescent “Love City” by Sly and the Family Stone.
