Bullied by buses, terrorized by car doors, and choked by exhaust fumes, we bicyclists—upstanding, nonpolluting citizens—suffer for the sins of the internal combustion engine. One day, when the fossil fuels run out, we’ll pedal along the empty, quiet roads we deserve, but until then we’ll have to make do with events like the National Capital Bike Tour, a 37-mile cycle past D.C.’s finest scenery, including Embassy Row, Capitol Hill, Rock Creek Park, and Forest Glen. The Tour de D.C. gets underway between 9:30 and 11 a.m. at American University, 4400 Massachusetts Ave. NW. $30 (benefits the Washington Area Bicyclists Association’s safety programs).
