NOVEMBER 17-19

At its “14th Annual Fall Dance Concert,” Gallaudet University’s Model Secondary School for the Deaf will be joined by a multitude of performers and companies including the National Deaf Dance Theater, Gallaudet Dance Company, Wild Zappers, the Maryland Youth Ballet, percussionist Evelyn Glennie, and Indian dancer/choreographer Astad Deboo. In addition to those choreographed for the show by KanKouran West African Dance Company artistic director Assane Konte and Israeli artist-in-residence Yola Rozynek, the program features works by MSSD students and staff. Many of the evening’s pieces incorporate sign language, crossing the sometimes fine line between the visual, gestural language and the physical language of dance. MSSD senior Mervin Primeaux’s Shelter (pictured) tells its story through American Sign Language and movement, while National Deaf Dance Theater/Wild Zappers director Fred Beam goes a step further, incorporating signed, spoken, and danced poetry into his work. At 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday; matinee Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Gallaudet University’s Model Secondary School for the Deaf, Theater Malz, 800 Florida Ave. NE. $7. (202) 651-5019 (voice/TTY).
