Fans of the D.C.- based fast-food chain Burrito Brothers can enjoy a good read with their quesadillas. The Burrito Daily News touts itself as “the leading newspaper about taqueria culture.” Although the first issue features a reflection on the tomato (vegetable or fruit?), and a “customer profile” of Lisa E., singer for local band the Zimmermans (she prefers the spinach burrito), the one-page, double-sided flier has a loftier purpose. According to the lead story, co-owners Peter Fox and Eric Sklar have donated 5 percent of the company’s earnings to alternative energy projects such as the Center for Renewable Energy and Sustainable Technology (CREST) located in Union Station’s basement. Hopefully, the second issue will come down to earth and reprint the winning essay of the “Weird Burrito Story” contest. If you’ve been abducted by aliens while chomping on a burrito, write to BDN, 3273 M St. NW. Washington, DC 20007.
