Despite friction from the U.S. Naval Academy, Rice University’s Marching Owl Band finally managed to perform its halftime show at Annapolis on Saturday, and met with the apparent delight of the Navy crowd. As the band blasted an old Village People tune, hundreds of uniformed cadets in the stands responded gleefully, spelling out “Y-M-C-A” with their arms. Observed a Rice fan archly: “I thought they didn’t let gays into the military.” Replied his companion: “Oh, you remember. It’s don’t ask, don’t tell.”
