Her interest in S&M is probably just evidence of Diamanda Galas’ extremism, but there is a certain pain-is-pleasure principle to her harsh vocal acrobatics. The singer’s latest, The Sporting Life, tempers those with John Paul Jones’ bass, Pete Thomas’ drums, and an Islamic tilt, but it’s not without its ice-pick-sharp shrieks.
