Christmas is so easy these days. A quick trip to Toys “R” Us, a stop at Tick-Tock Liquors, then wrap everything up while watching Bob Hope’s 800th Christmas Special (with Barbara Eden and Joey Lawrence). Simple. But, for a glimpse at how the deprived gentry in 1903 celebrated (when Bob was a mere 37)—with candles and paper hats—put on your stovepipe and bustle and join the party at Christmas at Oatlands Plantation. Kissing balls and mistletoe abound. Tours are on the half-hour through Dec. 30 (except Thanksgiving): Tuesdays-Saturdays, 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m; Sundays, 1-4:30 p.m; Saturday-evening candlelit tours, 6-8:30 p.m. Oatlands Plantation, U.S. Rte. 15, six miles south of Leesburg (Rte. 7). $6-8.
